1859 - 1908
Rosa Emilia Jacintho was born in Santa Cruz, on the island of Flores, in the the Azores in May of 1859. She was the daughter of Antonio Jacintho Bicho and Maria deJesueAlmeda Bicho. Rosa was one of several children. Her brothers were Ventura, Antonio and Joseph and she also had a sister Mary. Rosa married Francisco da Costa in Santa Cruz on July 11, 1874. They made their home in Flores. It is probable that Francisco died sometime before 1892. He may have emigrated before Rosa and the children, but I have found no record of him in Rhode Island.
Many members of her family and her husband's family emigrated from Flores to Providence, RI. By the year 1892, when Rosa, her widowed mother Maria and her two children , Mary and Alfred arrived, they had an extended family to welcome them.
The family settled on Blanding Street in the Fox Point section of Providence. At that time, many Portuguese had come to settle there. The neighborhood had been predominately Irish since 1850, but most of the Irish had moved on, and the neighborhood now at the turn of the century was mostly Azorean.
The first record on which the family appears is the 1900 census. Rosa is a widow, age 39. Her mother Maria Bishee [Bicho] is 65. Alfred is 17. Her brother Joseph Bicho, and his two year old daughter, Julia, are living with them. Rosa is a dressmaker and Alfred is a stonesetter in a jewelry shop. His uncle Joseph is a butcher. Most of the men in Rosa's family were butchers or meat packers and grocers.
There are no other records of Rosa and her mother. Alfred's sister Mary died on December 7, 1907. She was the wife of Jesse Pasquale Ferria. Her child was Maria P. Ferria, or as we knew her,”Cousin Mae”. This information was in grandma's notes.
Rosa died on February 4, 1908 at her home on Blanding Ave. She was 47 years old. She is buried in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket, RI.
Her mother, Maria J. Bicho died on March 8, 1910 and is buried with her daughter. Alfred was the owner of the grave site.Rosa's Family
