Margaret Shattuck Taylor

Maragret Shattuck Taylor was born on September 9, 1881 in Providence, Rhode Island. She was the daughter of Robert Matthew Taylor and Elizabeth Barr, recent immigrants from Scotland.  Her father had been a prosperous gold plater in Scotland and Providence, and the family lived comfortably in the city of Providence. He died  sometime about 1884, and the family experience hard times. The older children left school and went to work. Elizabeth, her mother, had a family of 8 children, the oldest Robert aged 13. There were four boys and four girls in the family.
On November 1, 1901, Margaret Shattuck Taylor married James William Moran in the Pearl Street Baptist Church in Providence, RI . They were married by the Rev. John A. Hainer. Soon after they moved to North Attleboro. Bridget, her mother-mother-in-law, and hsister Mary Ellen and her daughter also moved with them. James and Margaret were living at 55 Commonwealth Ave. in 1910. They had been married for eight years. James was twenty-eight and Margaret was twenty-six. Of their three children, only Margaret Elizabeth, age three and Everett J. about one and a half were living. Howard James who was born in 1908 had died. The family continued to live in the same area. Their family grew by three more children, Frederick, also known as John Francis, Jack's father, was born in 1912, Norman Howard was born in 1914, and Edith May was born in 1918.
James worked in the jewelry business for the greater part of his life. He had his own home based shop on Bullfinch Ave. in Attleboro Falls for a number of years. His sister and mother always lived nearby. Bridget died in 1913.
Unfortunately, James developed a problem with alcohol. When I used to ask my grandmother Margaret where he was, she would say, "He is in the hospital and very sick." Who knows what really happened, and it is not for us to judge. He was hospitalized for many years. He died on September 25, 1954. One month, almost to the day, Margaret died. They had spent so many years together, and apart. They sleep peacefully now, together, in Mount Hope Cemetery in Attleboro Falls, MA.
